Radiation Safety

The Radiation Safety Office oversees the use of ionizing radiation on the Health Sciences Center campus to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations, to protect LSU Health Sciences Center employees, students, the public, and the environment. There are more than 120 labs in 4 buildings and approximately 90 investigators permitted to use radioisotopes.

 
 

 

The office provides basic radiation safety education to all radiation handlers on campus.



A Radiation Safety Class is held every quarter, usually the first week of the month. Everyone who has not previously attended the class at LSU Health Sciences Center - New Orleans and who works with or around radiation is required to attend. The class meets at 1:00 pm in the Medical Education Building. A memo is sent to all investigators 2 weeks prior to the class. Please call 568-6585 to sign up. There is a test given at the end of the class.
