Fire and Asbestos
The fire and asbestos
units of Environmental Health & Safety is responsible for
safety issues relating to fire and asbestos. The fire unit is
responsible for routine fire prevention inspections and initiate
corrective action for fire hazards, as well as regular
inspections of other life safety equipment; such as fire
standpipes, sprinkler systems, means of egress, and fire
alarms.
The asbestos unit is responsible for all renovation, demolition,
and building acquisition projects to assist in identification
and management of asbestos, a fibrous mineral that was used for
decades in all types of building materials because it is strong,
flexible, acid resistant, and heat resistant. Excessive
asbestos exposure can cause lung cancer, mesothelioma, and
asbestosis; therefore, this office is committed to assisting in
asbestos identification and management.
