Biological Safety
The biological safety program at LSU Health Sciences Center works to promote safe laboratory practices and
procedures, training, and technical biosafety advice to faculty and staff in regard to
containment, decontamination, disposal, facility design, and spill response. It is our goal to prevent
occupationally-acquired infections and the release of hazardous materials to the environment. Environmental
Health and Safety works closely with the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) to assure research and
procedural activities are in compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulation and
guidelines. Biosafety is the responsibility of all persons who manipulate pathogenic
microorganisms and rDNA molecules.
For guidance on safely working with biological materials, please review our Biological Safety Policies,
and other useful links provided on this page.
